I have years of experience in ag finance and business management.  I have lived what I am consulting.  I know what it is like trying to do the job correctly, work with others, stay within the “rules”, and all while trying to make a profit.  With that said, there are a couple of couple of experiences I am proudest of.  

I have helped several businesses get their finances back on track and moving in the right direction.  This takes time and a willingness to change on everyone’s part.  The process will be uncomfortable and stressful, but the goal is to get the business back on track.  Often this involves helping the team work together and focus.  

I have helped buy and sell several businesses.  This included facilitating and negotiating both sides of this equation.  I am familiar with the negotiation process, trying to manage income taxes, the legal process, and the “rules” you need to stay within.  This included analyzing the business to determine either a fair asking price or a fair purchase price.  This involves reviewing the financial records closely, knowing the type of business you are looking at, and sorting out the true business earnings. 

Having complete and accurate records makes this job so much easier.  I have valued good will and helped sort out payment terms for the new owner or seller.  This whole process is analogous to playing 3 dimensional chess since doing one thing often leads into a new consideration on a different level.  

I have developed several costing models.  Examples include setting equipment custom rates, crop costing, and helping price a packaged product for sale.  Besides helping set prices they are meant to be ongoing and updated as things change.  The challenge is incorporating financial analysis along with production data to get the desired result.  Overhead costs are commonly overlooked and should most definitely be a consideration.  My clients are still using these models years after being developed.
